Xylitol toothpaste has becoming more and more popular as the latest natural product to help improve dental health.
Xylitol toothpaste and other dental products have become popular due to xylitol’s ability to slow the growth of cavity causing bacteria. Using xylitol products multiple times a day, every day, has been shown to reduce dental plaque, decrease the incidences of dental caries, and has been shown to re-mineralize caries lesions.
So with so many hopping on the xylitol train, what’s the best xylitol toothpaste brand on the market? There are many brands out there and some are better than others. We recommend doing a bit of research before buying any toothpaste that is labeled as a “xylitol toothpaste brand.”
Finding the right xylitol toothpaste brand is as simple as checking the ingredients list on the box. For instance, this peppermint flavor toothpaste from Spry lists xylitol as the first ingredient.
However, this other xylitol toothpaste brand lists xylitol as the sixth ingredient, which makes it had to classify it as a xylitol toothpaste.
You would naturally want xylitol to be one of the first ingredients in a toothpaste when trying to reap the benefits. A proper amount of xylitol, about 5 grams, needs to be introduced to the system every day for the xylitol to produce any oral health benefits. With certain xylitol toothpaste brands containing such a small amount, it can be hard to get even one serving of xylitol during your daily tooth brushing sessions.
We recommend using the phrasing “Strive for Five,” as in, five doses of xylitol per day. This allows the xylitol to help keep the natural pH balance of the mouth which leads to less decay. It’s not that hard if you consider brushing your teeth twice a day, putting xylitol in your tea or coffee, chewing gum, using mints, or using a mouthwash. A proper dosage of xylitol through the day allows the bacteria, Streptococcus mutans, to starve and die off by up to 73%.
