CHAPTERÂ 4
XYLITOL IN SINUS CARE
Why would you put a sweetener in sinus care products? Well just like we covered in chapter three with oral care, xylitol has a lot of surprising health benefits.
Just like in oral care, xylitol helps keep bacteria from sticking to surfaces, that includes the nasal passages. Usually, germs and debris enter the sinuses and can adhere to the mucous membranes and nasal tissues which can lead to irritation and infection. Adding xylitol to a saline solution makes it harder for the germs or irritants to hang on, and it also makes it easier for our natural defenses to wash them out.
This means that regular use of a xylitol nasal product can help reduce the number of respiratory infections. The concentration of xylitol stimulates our own defensive washing of the nose. It also helps decrease the concentration of salt in the airway surface fluid which helps our own antibiotic substances there to be more effective, which is one of the issues with just saline.
Xlear is the only sinus care line that carries nasal products containing xylitol. Their sinus care line with xylitol helps sooth and moisturizes the sinuses. Their patented nasal spray contains only xylitol, purified water, salt, and grapefruit seed extract (as a preservative).
A big issue with many nasal sprays is that they can create rebound congestion and what is known as nasal spray addiction. A saline nasal spray with xylitol is non-addictive, can be used as often as needed, and can be used safely with other medications.
Nasal cleansing has been used for millennia to keep the nose and sinuses working as the natural filters they are.
